“What You See is What You Get” by Ned Gannon
acrylic on arches, 14 x 17”, 2011

Ned Gannon is headed “where, among sombre trees, the slim dogs go.” An accomplished professional illustrator, Gannon exhibits in art galleries around the United States. His work has appeared in a range of venues, as well as in various publications. Gannon teaches in the Department of Art & Design at UW-Eau Claire. In 2011, he participated in the Isle Royale National Park residency.

What You See is What You Get was created for Isle Royale National Park as a part of their artist in residency program. I wanted to include the wolf and moose predator and prey relationship, but also capture the aquatic wonder of being on an island; so I hid the larger mammals in the clouds and depicted (with some artistic license) Edward Island, which I had a view of from my station on Scoville Point. Isle Royale National Park is one of the few parks classified as wilderness due to the lack of roads and uninhabited landscape, but, oddly, it was made that way rather than preserved as Yellowstone and other well known parks were. Being there was magical.”
