UWEC Professor wins major fellowship for research

UW-Eau Claire professor, Sanjukta Chaudhuri, received an American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women.  She is one of 89 scholars in the nation to receive the award that include recipients from Harvard and Duke Universities. Chauduri is an assistant professor of economics, but has also taught feminist and diversity courses.  She will spend the summer researching gender issues in India including female mortality disadvantage there. “India’s population is characterized by millions of missing girls,” Chaudhuri said in a UW-Eau Claire press release. “Sons are considered more valuable offspring than daughters; consequently, female children may suffer from significant health, morbidity and, most importantly, mortality disadvantage.” Her research could help overcome the lack of understanding of these issues in developing countries.
