“This is a commissioned portrait of the wonderful, historic house overlooking the Chippewa River by the Grand Ave. footbridge. I have also done dozens of automotive and people portraits which you can view at my website. There you will also find my other worldly works which are easily the most fun and most satisfying. I use gouache (a type of watercolor) on acid free illustration board. I did go to art school (School of Visual Arts in NYC) and I believe I would be able to paint as well as I do now without it but my drawing skills were definitely upgraded there. My art is my business as well so if something strikes your fancy let me know at housjon@yahoo.com.” – The Artist

What we were thinking: As folks enter the downtown area of Eau Claire via State Street, they can't help but notice the immaculate victorian style mansions which only portray a sliver of the many other historic homes and architectural styles in the Chippewa Valley.  "A Fine Old Home in Eau Claire" by John Houseman is a surrealistic representation of one of these long standing gems. When the viewer dives into this piece, the refined gouache techniques reveal enormous amounts of detail. Since everything throughout the painting is in focus, there is no shortage of eye catching nooks and crannies to explore. Just as captivating as it is to drive by a well kept home, this cover strikes just as much attention, and that is why we showcased it on this issue. – V1 Designer Josh Smeltzer
