Farm City Day on Its Way

annual event connects city folks to the regional farms that supply them with food

Coming from America’s Dairyland, it’s safe to say that many of us enjoy the foods we get from our farms, but do we really understand all the hard work that is put into it? An annual event intends to reverse just that. The 4th Annual Chippewa Valley Farm-City Day, on Sept. 10, is a great way to learn a little about how much agriculture is an important part of our everyday lives. The Farm-City Day event is an annual festival/expo that means to provide everyone with a chance to visit and understand a local farming operation. Every year, the event is hosted a different type of farm (e.g. corn/bio-fuel, dairy, organic, poultry) so everyone can see how diverse our farming community really is. In previous years, the event has been held at Schafferland Farms (a cash grain farm near Eau Claire), D&D Hawkins Farm (a large dairy farm near Chippewa Falls), and last year the event was held at Govin’s Meats and Berries (with sheep, strawberries, corn maze, and a pumpkin patch). This year, it’s at Castle Rock Organic Farms near Foster, where they produce organic milk, cheese, and even ice cream. You get to see where and how the food is produced, get a tour of the organic farm and creamery plant and enjoy some activities. Oh, and did I mention there’s food? So get away from the city and enjoy what the country has to offer.
