EC CLAIMS INTERNATIONAL TUBA CHAMPION, BABY
UWEC sophomore Kurtis Polishinski recently returned home after becoming the Drum Corps International World Class Section Champion for solo tubists. Polishinski hails from Sun Prairie where he is a part of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, one of 23 other organizations competing in the competition with approximately 18 tuba soloists. His musical roots are entrenched in UWEC tradition, as he was taught to play tuba by alumnus Chris Gleason, who now teaches at a middle school in Sun Prairie. When Polishinski returns to school in the fall he plans to continue training with UWEC professor Jerry Young. Then it’s on to graduate school and playing at the professional level.

CITY TO CHOOSE DESIGN FIRM FOR BARSTOW IN OCTOBER
The city recently threw out a Request for Proposals on the South Barstow Street redesign project with a deadline for submissions around Sept. 22. You know about the project, right? You know, the thing we did a big ole’ massive themed issue about and made a cool web section for: VolumeOne.org/street. We hear the city hopes to pick a firm to handle the project, create an official agreement, and hold a meeting betwixt them and the Eau Claire City Council by October 26-ish (the council’s second legislative session that month). So, we’d expect the window for public input to (roughly) run from November 2010 through June 2011. And we’d hope the public outreach on the project to be at least as intensive as SEH’s process for Hastings Way.
