Rocking from Stage to Screen

Decadent Cabaret documentary chronicles 31 years of rock

Trevor Kupfer |

Thirty-one years ago, staff and students from the university’s art department planned a unique concert. It was one band, one night, and they called it Decadent Cabaret. Since then, the annual event has gone through a crazy metamorphosis, changed hands and venues, and this year included 20 bands over the course of three nights. Back in January the guys behind Eight Foot Squid Productions (Fenris Unchained), most notably Jason Boehm (camera work) and Aaron Rigby (post production), got involved and decided to create a documentary on the event’s history and explosion to the biggest all-local music event in our area. The core of the 34-minute film concerns a roundtable discussion at House of Rock, with event founders, current organizers, former bands, and current bands, tracking the event’s start and changes over the years. Interspersed throughout are clips from this year’s performances, still images from years past, and on-site interviews with people in the audience and performers in the green room. “I filmed about 30 hours of footage,” Boehm said, “and I really wish we could have gotten all 20 bands in there from this year, but there’s only so much you can do in a half hour.”
