Diehard cinephiles, take note: a short jaunt to the south, the Milwaukee Film Festival is gearing up to present more than 100 films from around the world, Sept. 24 to Oct. 4 at the Oriental Theatre and North Shore Cinema in Milwaukee. This year’s highlights include Uruguyan award-winning comedy Gigante, about a shy supermarket security guard who develops a healthy obsession with a cleaning woman at his store; Afghan Star, a documentary about an American Idol-esque show in Afghanistan; Art & Copy, about the biggest creative minds in advertising; and a new frame-by-frame restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 classic Rashomon. A $200,000 gift this summer from Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig (a Milwaukee native) is helping to support the festivals this year and next year, which are put on by new independent organization Milwaukee Film.
